X-Overlays App

Starting with Final Cut Pro version 10.4.9 the editor can use "Custom Overlays". That's a very helpful feature. You can use any picture (with transparency). You can create those in any of the popular image editors – even with the Preview.app.
But since most of the overlays are pretty simple and more driven by numbers rather than by design standard image editors – in most cases – aren't the best choice.
So I thought it would be handy to have a simple app which can create basic overlays like grids, masks and zones and allows to add them to the users arsenal in a simple way.

The app stores the created overlays at system level (Boot Disk ▸ Library ▸ Application Support ▸ X-Overlays ▸ Generated Overlays).
In Final Cut Pro the custom overlays are 'locked' to user accounts (Boot Disk ▸ Users ▸ ⁨User Name⁩ ▸ Library ▸ Application Support ▸ ProApps ▸ Custom Overlays). In case you have several users and want an overlay accessable for all you have to log in into is these user accounts and select "your overlay".

Main Interface

You can create various kinds of custom overlays for different FCP project formats. Those can be activated/de-activated for each user.

Overlay Types
  • Grids
  • Masks
  • Zones

Quick Guide
  • Create an overlay:
Select a FCP project size (ratio)
    • Select an overlay type (grid, zone, mask) – cmd + 1, cmd + 2, cmd + 3,
    • Test Overlay – cmd + T
    • Save Overlay – cmd + S
  • Add an overlay to the user's "Custom Overlays"
Select an overlay in the upper application list and press "Activate Selected For User". This will create a symbolic link.
  • Deactivate an overlay in the user's "Custom Overlays"
Select an overlay in the lower user list and press "Remove Selected For User"cmd + Delete
  • To remove an overlay in the app's overlay list (and the user's "Custom Overlays")
Select an overlay in the upper app overlay list or the lower user list and press "Delete (Both)"cmd + Shift + Delete
  • Double-click on any saved overlay in any of the tables will reveal the selected overlay in Finder.

The app is free. You might think about a donation to save some time for yourself and to support development.

Fine print
As always use the app on your own risk. I'm not responsible for any damages that might happen.
Support is based on a 'I've spare time this moment', so sometimes you may have to wait for a few days to get a response. But I'll do my best.
