Starting with Final Cut Pro version 10.4.9 the editor can use "Custom Overlays". That's a very helpful feature.
You can use any picture (with transparency). You can create those in any of the popular image editors – even with the Preview.app.
But since most of the overlays are pretty simple and more driven by numbers rather than by design standard image editors – in most cases – aren't the best choice.
So I thought it would be handy to have a simple app which can create basic overlays like grids, masks and zones and allows to add them to the users arsenal in a simple way.
The app stores the created overlays at system level (Boot Disk ▸ Library ▸ Application Support ▸ X-Overlays ▸ Generated Overlays).
In Final Cut Pro the custom overlays are 'locked' to user accounts (Boot Disk ▸ Users ▸ User Name ▸ Library ▸ Application Support ▸ ProApps ▸ Custom Overlays). In case you have several users and want an overlay accessable for all you have to log in into is these user accounts and select "your overlay".
You can create various kinds of custom overlays for different FCP project formats. Those can be activated/de-activated for each user.
Very cool, Andreas!
